Activities
  • #30 - The "warm-up" is one of the most important components of a good rehearsal. It is during this time that the mind, muscles, and instrument are warmed up, and the rehearsal atmosphere is set for the day. While it should be part of the daily routine, it should not be mindlessly repetitive. The warm-up period is an excellent time to offer instruction in all aspects of musicianship including: rhythm, tonality, harmony (chords), intervals, history, and composition. (See score pages 562-563.)
  • #30 - Divide the group into two groups. Have half of the students play #30, Warm Up, while the other students listen for: good tone, two full counts of silence on the rests, a breath mark where indicated, and the cut-off at the end of the line.
  • #30 - Play as a round. Have the first group play two measures before the second group starts. Listen for good tone.
  • #30 - Review the checklist to produce the best possible tone: 1) Posture 2) Right hand position 3) Left hand position 4) Elbows and shoulders 5) Instrument position/angle 6) Embouchure.
  • #34 - Composition: Give students a piece of staff paper. Ask them to rewrite the first line of #34 in 4/4 time. Have studetns exchange papers with a partner to check that there are four beats in each measure, and that the notes, clef, and breath marks are identical to those in the book.
  • #34 - Playing by ear: See score pages 557-558. Give the starting notes to your students for eight short melodies. 1) Bb C Bb 2) Bb C D 3) Bb D F 4) Bb D D 5) Bb D C 6) Bb C D Eb F 7) Bb Eb F 8) Bb D F G
